Mew - Like Paper Cuts. The band, Mew, was one of my favorite aural discoveries of 2006. My friend, Frippy, had been raiding her boyfriend's music when she happened upon this band. I picked it up off of her playlists at lastfm.com and became curious, exploring on my own. Now in 2007, the 30 or so songs I downloaded have only grown on me and I realize I have to spend a bit of dosh to catch up on their 10 year history. This is a single... I love the fucked up sound at the beginning that makes me think of a distressed foot pedal on an old piano. Although this is one of their quieter, more straight-forward offerings, this band often meshes unbridled pop with bizarre stop/starts, odd tempo changes, opening bits that are completely abandoned after 30 seconds... the old intro - chorus - middle 8 - chorus structure of pop music is completely ignored. As i told Frippy: They're too weird for the pop crowd and too pop for the weird crowd. My Find of 2006.
